Very cold air at high altitude causes instability with some weak storms over the English Channel and the Normandy coast.
On October 21, 2017, an autumnal gale accompanied by a risk of light thunderstorms occurred on the Normandy coast, with waves up to 2 meters high crashing in the bay of Étretat.
That day, in the heart of spring, a very cold air mass at altitude affected the Normandy region; this very cold air mass caused a weak storm.
That day, I was surprised because no weather model predicted a risk of storms. A cold air mass storm associated with very cold air at altitude occurred, and under this storm, a funnel cloud (the beginning of a tornado) developed.
